Explanation of the columns in this voters’ list:
- Name — Voter’s name. This list been sorted in surname order, which is quite different from the order in the original list, which was, in descending order: Polling Division; Part; Surname (sorted by first letter of surname only). Thus, in the original, members of the same family were listed together, an order which has been lost in this list.
- Address — the name of the street has been put before the number to allow sorting of this file on street name. The designation “pt”, presumably means “part”. Other designations and comments are as in the original list.
- Sub — Polling Sub-division and Part which have been combined into a three-digit number.
Example: “031” means Polling Sub-division 3, Part 1, etc.
Each sub-division is divided into a Part 1 and Part 2 section, described below:
Polling sub-divisions and parts are as follows:- Polling Sub-division No. 1: Comprising all that part of Dufferin Ward which lies North of the Centre of Church Street.
- Part 1: Persons entitled to vote at Both Municipal Election and Elections to the Legislative Assembly.
- Part 2: Persons entitled to vote at Municipal Elections only. [I believe these were people who lived in another ward or town, but who could vote in the ward because of land ownership or tenancy -Ed].
- Polling Sub-division No. 2: Comprising all that part of Dufferin Ward lying South of the Centre of Church Street and North of the Centre of Main Street and Main Street produced to Western Boundary of the Corporation.
- Polling Sub-division No. 3: Comprising all that part of Dufferin Ward lying South of the Centre of Main Street, and Main Street produced to the Western Boundary of the Corporation and North of the Centre of Rideau River.

- Polling Sub-division No. 8: Comprising all that part of Rideau Ward lying South of the centre of William street, from Beckwith to Elmsley streets, and north of the centre of Main street, from Beckwith to Bay streets, and east, of the centre of Bay street and North and East of the Rideau River.

- Polling Sub-division No. 1: Comprising all that part of Dufferin Ward which lies North of the Centre of Church Street.
- Occ — Occupation. The meaning of these codes can be found in the Occupation Codes page on this website.
- J — Juror Status. If this field contains a “j”, the voter was eligible to be a juror.
- Status — These two fields seem to denote occupancy and marital status, although for many women, both fields contain marital status, unless they are property owners. Can anyone sort this out for me so I can give the correct info here? The letters “t” seems to mean “tenant”; “o” and “own” are “owner”; “mf” and “mw” are possibly “married female” and “married woman” (why the difference?); “b” presumably for “bachelor”; etc.
- S — Separate School suporter. An “s” in this field indicates a separate (Catholic) school suporter. (They voted for Separate School board trustees instead of Public School board trustees).
- PO — Post Office. Almost all of the voters on this list have a number “1” in this field, and that is assumed to mean “Smiths Falls”, thus the “SF” after the majority of names. However, in the Part 2 sections, many of whom were non-resident voters, are represented by other numbers. Unfortunately there is no chart in this voters’ list telling what the numbers stand for, so the numbers in the list were put in this field.
Example: Name Address Sub Occ J Status S PO AHERNE, Ed. Beckwith, 9 061 Ca j o m s SF
This indicates that Ed. Aherne lived at No. 9 Beckwith, was in polling sub-division 6, part 1; was a carpenter, eligible for jury duty, owned his property, was married, was a Separate School supporter and lived in Smiths Falls.
